CHENNAI: Days after announcement of separate entrance tests for PG courses, Anna University has withdrawn the notification. It had announced to conduct entrance tests for postgraduate courses offered in university departments and its constituent colleges.

The decision was taken after the higher education department issued a fresh order on April 29 changing the co-ordination committee for Tamil Nadu Common Entrance Test (Tancet). As per the new order, the director of technical education will just be a member instead of a co-chairman and Anna University Vice-Chancellor will be the chairman for the committee.

"The higher education department has withdrawn the changes it had made to the coordination committee. Hence, we decided to conduct the TANCET 2019 and it would be the single exam for all PG engineering courses offered in Tamil Nadu," university officials told TOI.
The first coordination meeting of the committee is to be held on Thursday. The university on Sunday announced that students have to write a separate entrance test for getting admission to the ME, M Tech, M Arch and M Plan, MBA and MCA courses.
Welcoming the decision, professors from Anna University said the government should have given the task of conducting online engineering counselling to the university as well.

Due to the difference of opinion in reconstitution of Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (TNEA) committee, the vice-chancellor of Anna University resigned from the committee and Directorate Of Technical Education is conducting the online engineering counselling for BE, BTech courses this year.
"There are still doubts whether the DOTE can pull it off without any glitch as it lacked the technical prowess. If there is any confusion, it would affect thousands of students," professors said.
However, sources in the government said the task of conducting online counselling will be jointly undertaken by the DOTE and a private vendor.

An understanding of how APN works comes handy when you’re switching your operator. Although not a common occurrence, there are instances when the mobile data connection doesn’t just kick in. All you’ll have to do is configure the APN (Access Point Name) manually in Android.
APN is the information that lists the addresses that the phone uses to connect to the operator’s network. The ports that are used to send and receive Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) messages, the type of data used in particular for the APN and all other essential information.
Setting up the APN in Android
The simplest way to configure the APN in Android is to turn off the phone, replace the old SIM card with the new and restart the phone again and you’re good to go. The connection to the new contracted operator’s network. If it does not work, you can manually configure the name of the access point.
The data to be entered in the APN configuration screen can be obtained by contacting the operator through their customer service number.
1) Open the phone settings.
2) Access the Wireless and networks menu (the name varies depending on the customization layer which will vary).

4) From the list, you can access the option called “Access Point Name or APN.”
5) A three-dot menu can be found on the upper right corner of the screen.

8) The information that has been listed by the operator can be entered here.
9) Once done with these, press the tick button on the upper right corner in order to “Save” the settings.

The above steps will set up the APN in the Android manually. Changes, if needed, can make changes to an existing APN due to modifications applied by the SIM card operator. The steps that need to be taken in order to do so is similar to steps listed below up to step 3. After accessing the Mobile Networks menu, go through the list and choose the APN you wish to edit. The information obtained from the operator can be entered to the APN of your choosing. After doing so, click on “Save” and your mobile data connection starts to function and you will be good to go.

Hackers have been found exploiting a pair of critical security vulnerabilities in one of the popular social media sharing plugins to take control over WordPress websites that are still running a vulnerable version of the plugin.


The vulnerable plugin in question is Social Warfare which is a popular and widely deployed WordPress plugin with more than 900,000 downloads. It is used to add social share buttons to a WordPress website or blog.

Late last month, maintainers of Social Warfare for WordPress released an updated version 3.5.3 of their plugin to patch two security vulnerabilities—stored cross-site scripting (XSS) and remote code execution (RCE)—both tracked by a single identifier, i.e., CVE-2019-9978.

Hackers can exploit these vulnerabilities to run arbitrary PHP code and take complete control over websites and servers without authentication, and then use the compromised sites to perform digital coin mining or host malicious exploit code.

However, the same day when Social Warfare released the patched version of its plugin, an unnamed security researcher published a full disclosure and a proof-of-concept for the stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability.

Soon after the full disclosure and PoC release, attackers started attempting to exploit the vulnerability, but fortunately, it was only limited to the injected JavaScript redirect activity, with researchers finding no in-the-wild attempts to exploit the RCE vulnerability.

Now, Palo Alto Network Unit 42 researchers found several exploits taking advantage of these vulnerabilities in the wild, including an exploit for the RCE vulnerability which allows the attacker to control the affected website and an exploit for the XSS vulnerability which redirects victims to an ads site.

Though both flaws originated because of improper input handling, using a wrong, insufficient function eventually made it possible for remote attackers to exploit them without requiring any authentication.

"The root cause of each of these two vulnerabilities is the same: the misuse of the is_admin() function in WordPress," the researchers say in a blog post. "Is_admin only checks if the requested page is part of admin interface and won't prevent any unauthorized visit."

At the time of writing, more than 37,000 WordPress websites out of 42,000 active sites, including education, finance, and news sites (some Alexa's top ranking websites), are still using an outdated, vulnerable version of the Social Warfare plugin, leaving hundreds of millions of their visitors at the risk of hacking through various other vectors.

Since it is likely the attackers will continue to exploit the vulnerabilities to target WordPress users, website administrators are highly recommended to update the Social Warfare plugin to 3.5.3 or newer version as soon as possible.
