New York, Canada, Ireland Launch New Investigations Into Facebook Privacy Breaches

Facebook has a lot of problems, then there are a lot of problems for Facebook—and both are not going to end anytime sooner.

Though Facebook has already set aside $5 billion from its revenue to cover a possible fine the company is expecting as a result of an FTC investigation over privacy violations, it seems to be just first installment of what Facebook has to pay for continuously ignoring users' privacy.

This week, Facebook has been hit with three new separate investigations from various governmental authorities—both in the United States and abroad—over the company's mishandling of its users' data.

New York Attorney General to Investigate Facebook Email Collection Scandal

New York Attorney General is opening an investigation into Facebook's unauthorized collection of the email contacts of more than 1.5 million users during site registration without their permission.

Earlier this month, Facebook was caught practicing the worst ever user-verification mechanism by asking users new to its social network platform for their email account passwords to verify their identity.

However, just last week it turned out that the social network "unintentionally" uploaded email contacts from up to 1.5 million new users on its servers, without their consent or knowledge, Facebook admitted while saying the data was reportedly used to "build Facebook's web of social connections and recommend friends to add."

According to the New York Attorney General Letitia James, the harvested email addresses may have exposed hundreds of millions of Facebook users to targeted advertisements.

"Facebook has repeatedly demonstrated a lack of respect for consumer information while at the same time profiting from mining that data," James said in a statement, adding that now it's time that the social media company should "held accountable for how it handles consumers' personal information."

In response to the news, a Facebook spokesperson told The NY Times that the company is "in touch with the New York State attorney general's office and are responding to their questions on this matter."

Ireland Investigating into Facebook Over Plaintext Passwords Scandal

The Irish Data Protection Commission had begun an investigation into a separate Facebook's privacy bunder exposed last month when the social network revealed that it left hundreds of millions of passwords of Facebook, Facebook Lite and Instagram users exposed in plain text on company servers.

At the time, it was reported that the incident exposed "tens of thousands" passwords of Instagram users in plaintext, while just last week it was revealed that the actual number of affected Instagram users were not in hundreds of thousands but millions.

The exposed passwords were potentially dated back to 2012 and were accessible to up to 2,000 Facebook employees.

In a statement on Thursday, the Irish Data Protection Commissioner said it has launched "a statutory inquiry in relation to this issue to determine whether Facebook has complied with its obligations under relevant provisions" of the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) designed to protect people's data.

Canada to Sue Facebook Over Cambridge Analytica Scandal

Canadian regulators are also suing Facebook for allegedly violating the country's privacy laws following their investigation into the March 2018's Cambridge Analytica scandal and its impact on Canadians.

joint report published Thursday from Canadian privacy commissioner Daniel Therrien and his British Columbia counterpart said lax security practices at the company allowed personal information of hundreds of thousands of Canadians to be used for political purposes.

The watchdogs started investigating Facebook last year after it was revealed that a UK political consultancy Cambridge Analytica harvested data from about 87 million users and then used it for political gain without their knowledge or permission.

The report said Facebook committed a "major breach of trust" and "abdicated its responsibility for personal information under its control, effectively shifting that responsibility to users and apps."

The United States FTC is also investigating Facebook over the Cambridge Analytica scandal, and the company has already kept aside $5 billion from its revenue in anticipation of the settlement with the commission.

Hacker hacking McDonald's App, ordering thousands of dollars of worth food

In Canada, McDonalds is losing out on thousands of dollars
because of a notorious hacking act. The unidentified  person is hacking into McDonalds app of strangers to rack up thousands of dollars worth food purchase.

The recent victim was Patrick O’Rourke, who is  the managing editor of the tech news site MobileSyrup. He said that he didn’t realise till recently that someone has hacked into his Mcdonald's app and has ordered almost 100 meals between April 12 and April 18

According to the CBC report ,there were mass purchases of Big Macs and McFlurries. O’Rourke doubts whether a single person could have eaten all the food.

He told CBC,”It could be one guy who was able to hack my account and he shared it with a bunch of his friends across Montreal, and they all just went on a food spree,”

There have been other incidences of similar nature across Canada recently, where McDonalds app was hacked and a huge amount of bill was raised through the illegal buying of food. There have been four victims across Canadian provinces, all of them belongs to Quebec. So now Quebec Police is searching for the possible hacker in Quebec.

According to O’Rourke, McDonalds was not much to the help in the matter. He said “To me, it just seems like a little bit negligent… like they don’t really care, McDonald’s should at least be sending out a mass email to everyone that has the account [to say], ‘Hey, you should reset your password.’ ”

In Canada, McDonalds app has been hacked before.

3 ways to message a number on WhatsApp without adding them as a contact first

One of the biggest annoyances of WhatsApp, which I have to explain to everyone new to the app (a number that's dwindling every day), is that you can only start chats with numbers that are saved as phone contacts. The only exception is if you receive a contact's number from someone else inside a WhatsApp chat, in which case you can start talking to them without adding them to your address book first.

However, there are a few ways to bypass this limitation, one of which is provided by WhatsApp itself, though not natively in the app. If you're not aware of these, I'll explain three of the easiest methods below.

WhatsApp's own wa.me links

WhatsApp provides an official way to contact an unsaved number, just not within the app. As explained in this FAQ, you can start a chat with any number by going to the web address https://wa.me/phonenumber. Replace the last part with the full number, with the country and region code, but without any + or - or () or 00.
So for example, if you want to chat with the number +1-234-567-8900 in the US, you would go to the URL: https://wa.me/12345678900. Type it in the browser and you'll get the web page below with a big green Messageicon. Tapping on it opens a conversation with that phone number in WhatsApp (if the number is registered on the service, obviously).

Use an app to speed things up

If the above method seems a little confusing or slow for you, you can use an app to speed things up. Several Android apps use these wa.me links but in a non-user-facing way — i.e. you don't have to type a URL or pass by a web browser first. You simply enter the phone number, tap a button, and you're taken to a newly-created chat in WhatsApp.
Among these apps, Click to chat is the lightest (113 KB), has no ads, and requires no permissions to speak of. Direct Message for WhatsApp and Easy Message are a couple of other good alternatives without ads and with few permissions.

Download Click Chat
Text selection and App Actions
The third method may be the lesser known of the bunch — to be honest, I discovered it a few days ago and it's why I'm writing this article. However, it's the easiest, fastest, and best integrated.
Whenever you have a phone number in any app, you can simply select the corresponding text, and check the suggested actions. The main ones are always Call, Cut, Copy, Paste, but if you tap the overflow button (three dots), you may see more options including sending a WhatsApp message. Just select that and the chat will be started.
In our testing, this works on both Android 9 Pie and Q, but only on stock devices (Pixels and Android One). We saw the other actions on Huawei, Samsung, and OnePlus phones, but not the WhatsApp one. Hopefully, the integration will make its way to non-stock Android devices later.

These workarounds should come in handy if you frequently have short-term chats with strangers. For example, I sometimes have to talk to people to arrange selling or buying some second-hand items, and I don't really need to add all these temporary acquaintances to my contacts. I'm sure you can think of, uhm, other ways this would be useful.
It's not clear why the limitation has to exist inside WhatsApp in the first place, or why you can't simply type a number and message them like on any SMS app, but here we are. Thankfully, we all now have at least three ways to bypass that restriction.

Which Android phone starred in Avengers: Endgame?

Avengers: Endgame is out in cinemas now, as 21 movies culminate in a great battle to undo Thanos' snap and bring half of the world's population back from the dead. If you're one of the millions of people who are watching it on opening weekend, did you spot the Android phones that make an appearance?

There are actually two Android phones that make an appearance, but only one features prominently. Without spoiling the movie, a Nearly Pink Pixel 3 makes an appearance when two characters are asked by a fan to take a picture. It's actually a rather funny moment, so if you haven't seen it yet – or you're going to see it again like I am – then watch out for it.
While you're at it, also look out for a very fleeting appearance by the Galaxy S8. It features in a scene about five minutes after the Pixel 3, and it's barely on-screen for a second. While it's likely that featuring the Pixel 3 was a business deal – likely including Google's search snap – the Galaxy S8 may just be a coincidence.
Have you seen Avengers: Endgame yet? What did you think? Let us know in the comments below (without spoiling it for everyone), and remember, if you're not happy with any part of it, you can always create your own ending with these Avengers: Endgame Funko Pop!

PUBG Is A 'Waste Of Time', Says Shroud: One Of The Biggest Online Game Streamers

Twitch streamers are practically celebrities in their own rights. For game streamers, that means their fan base follow their games, absorb their opinions, and they even get sponsorship deals. So when a major streamer slams a game for being crap, people sit up and listen.
"I'm not playing this," he told his viewers. "This is fucking stupid. I don't even care. I'm not dealing with this shit, it's a waste of my time."

Take Michael Grzesiek, a former CS:GO pro who streams under the handle 'Shroud'. Now Shroud is one of the most recognisable names on Twitch, streaming full-time everyday. He's played a lot of battle royale games like PUBG, Fortnite, Call of Duty Black Ops 4, Apex Legends, and more. But he's only badmouthed one of them repeatedly so far.
Recently, Shroud went off against Apex Legends, deciding to abandon the newest entry to the genre to return to PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds. That switch was short-lived though, as the streamer lost his temper with the long-running game.
That session, Shroud was hit with two instances of lag during his first two games. Then, while still in the lobby for his third match, his game lagged again. Shroud had had enough, and shut down the game.

Mind you, Shroud had said just three days previously that he was thinking of quitting Apex Legends for good and returning to PUBG, also thanks to in-game glitches and issues. "PUBG's in a really good state right now," he said at the time.

But after his PUBG pains, he immediately ended up going back to Apex Legends for the rest of the stream to get his battle royale fix. Whether he'll return long-term is anyone's guess.
For competing games like these, the opinions and comments of someone like Shroud are very important. He draws an average of about 30,000 viewers for every stream, each of which are for a few hours at a time. All of these people are watching him, some for entertainment and some for research on improving their game. And any moves he makes from one game to another is likely to bring thousands of other with him.

Right now, Apex Legends' developer might be happy that Shroud is playing their game. But it's not great for them if the game is his second choice just because PUBG is acting up.

MIUI 10 GLOBAL BETA 9.4.25 BRINGS BUG FIXES AND OPTIMIZATIONS FOR EVERYONE

Xiaomi continues to bring small improvements to MIUI, the ROM present in all its smartphones (with the obvious exception of those based on Android One), in order to make the user experience even more fulfilling.
Here is the changelog of the new MIUI 10 Global Beta 9.4.25, a release that brings so many bug fixes and optimizations, but basically … few new features!

In addition to the latest security patches, upgrading to the MIUI 10 Global Beta 9.4.25 brings with it an avalanche of fixes and perhaps the most interesting ones are those that affect the Camera app. Below is the complete changelog:

System:

Update Android security patches
Lock screen, status bar, notification bar:

Added: Lock screen resident notification in the DND state
Fixed: Talkback mode was not charging but prompted “fast charging”
Fixed: Problem still occurs in special cases after the screen turned off

Camera:

Fixed: Switching the camera mode under the square frame on the front of the camera, and exiting the square frame when returning.
Fixed: the occasional darkening of filter
Fixed: filter repeated rendering
Data Usage:

Fixed: Data usage stats occasionally stopped running
Xiaomi Cloud Service:

Fixed the status display problem of the Settings page

At the time of writing, the Mi Community portal – the new home of the MIUI forum – has not yet confirmed the release of the update. Surely the OTA will begin to appear on the Xiaomi models in the next few hours, so all that remains is to wait for the update to take its course.
